Werk is a marketplace of flexible work opportunities from top companies for ambitious women, as well as a community of next-generation of women who are ready to challenge the status quo. We aim to empower women to 'lean sideways' to better accommodate competing responsibilities like caregiving, while always keeping the leadership track in view.

Werk started with a soft, analog 'alpha' launch in late March. Since we launched we have had weekly growth of over 200%. Our traction is officially viral. The demand has been such that we moved up our MVP by four months, which went live last week. We are currently rapidly iterating on our MVP, in order to launch a full beta product by early July. Our goal is to launch a full product in Q42 016.

We have also developed an impressive group of supporters, including Gloria Steinem, Ellevate, The Girls' Lounge, McKinsey & Co., J. Crew, and #womenwhowork. We were accepted into Mass Challenge, and were finalists in Entrepreneurs Roundtable Accelerator and Grand Central Tech. We are currently Friends & Family funded, and have already had investment from professional Angels. We are targeting the fall for a formal Seed round of $1-2M.

Thus far our tech has been provided by Originate, a full service tech firm. They are deeply philosophically aligned with Werk and very supportive of what we are trying to build, and as such, have developed everything to date essentially for free. We are in the process of formalizing our relationships – but want an internal Head of Engineering to lead those efforts.

The role
The Head of Engineering’s role is to assure the successful execution of the company’s business mission through development and deployment of the tech product. This requires envisioning the company’s service offerings as a web-based business, leading implementation of web applications, and planning for risk and growth. You will have the support of a full service tech firm behind you – with a product lead, designers and developers on call. You will also be able to fill out your internal team as needed, and as budget allows. This role is a critical first hire for Werk, to help translate business strategy into technical needs – and to have a feedback loop from tech to business strategy.

Responsibilities (these will likely evolve)
Strategy & Planning
In partnership with the company’s founders, identify opportunities and risks for delivering the company’s services, including identification of competitive services, opportunities for innovation, and assessment of marketplace obstacles and technical hurdles to the business success.
Identify technology trends and evolving social behavior that may support or impede the success of the business.
Maintain up-to-date knowledge of technology standards, industry trends, emerging technologies, and software development best practices by attending relevant conferences and reading widely (including reading your peers’ blogs!).
Evaluate and identify appropriate technology platforms (including web application frameworks and the deployment stack) for delivering the company’s services.
Lead strategic planning to achieve business goals by identifying and prioritizing development initiatives and setting timetables for the evaluation, development, and deployment of all web-based services.
Communicate the company’s technology strategy to investors, management, staff, partners, customers, and stakeholders.
Implementation & Deployment
Collaborate with the founders and potential customers to develop use cases (or user stories) and specifications that describe the implementation of the company’s services as a web application.
Collaborate with Originate and potential customers to prepare wireframes or mockups of a prototype of the company’s web application.
Coordinate and collaborate with graphic designers
Select or define the company’s software development methodology.
Establish a specification conformance and testing regimen based on user stories and the User Experience design.
Review current best practices for the selected web framework and establish the initial architecture for the application.
Select and manage company staff or outsourced vendors (e.g., Originate) who will implement the application; Define additional resoiurces as needed, and propose plans on scaling the tech/product team to the Founders
Establish and supervise a quality assurance process, including integration and system testing.
Review and approve proposed development releases and manage the release process.
QA and Analytics
Establish and monitor a web analytics regime that measures site traffic and application usage relative to business goals.
Support the marketing process by providing implementation of technical requirements for Internet marketing and search engine optimization.
As a member of the senior management team, establish a customer service and support process, with particular responsibility for web-based services that implement the support function. Establish a process to integrate customer service and support with the software engineering process to support resolution of customer issues and improve application usability.

Requirements
University degree in the field of computer science or related field, preferred. An advanced degree in one these fields is a plus.
Comfort in an early stage startup environment.
Hunger to learn, grow, and develop with the company.
Ability to quickly iterate on existing product, to lead a team of engineers, and manage outside vendors.
Demonstrated ability to envision web-based services that meet consumer needs or solve business problems.
Ability to translate business strategy and opportunity into a product and technical requirements.
Hands-on experience coding in more than one currently popular web application framework (currently we are using Ruby on Rails)
Experience with front-end and back-end development.
Familiar with more than one software development methodology.
Ability to discern user requirements and develop specifications.
Knowledge of web standards.
Knowledge of Internet protocols and RFC standards, database management systems, and revision control systems.
Familiarity with technical requirements of Internet marketing and search engine optimization.
Exposure to business theory, management, startups a plus.

Location
The Werk team will be based in NYC. Ideal location is in NYC. We can build some location flexibility into the role, but some time in NYC is a must.

Compensation
Compensation will consist of a base, performance-based bonus, and equity. Details will be discussed directly with the candidate.
