Principal Research Scientist

The Company
Platelet BioGenesis is a biotech startup that was spun out of Harvard Medical School in 2014 to produce donor-independent human platelets. Based on our potential impact, we were recently featured by Discover Magazine as one of the Top 100 Stories of 2014 (#26). We are a highly driven and ambitious young company that values openness and transparency, candid immediate feedback, and collaboration, in our endeavor to transform the blood system.

The Opportunity
We have developed and patented a microfluidic bioreactor, and shown that functional platelets can be generated from human pluripotent stem cell cultures. We are now developing our own GMP-compliant human induced pluripotent stem cell line and are scaling platelet production for human clinical trials (2-3 year pre-clinical study). We are currently seeking a PhD-level research scientist with stem cell, megakaryocyte, and platelet experience to establish an independent research lab and lead our platelet program.

Who We Are Seeking
We are looking for a hungry independent thinker with a monster work ethic that shares our long-term vision for a donor-independent blood system. Personal drive and creative problem solving are priorities since you’ll be partnering with us to fundamentally disrupt a firmly established industry.

Duties and Responsibilities
Because we are a startup, the position calls for duties that are broad and variable, with unlimited opportunity for advancement. Specifically, you will be responsible for:
 Design and execution of experiments for multiple projects with input from the CSO and Scientific Advisory Committee
 Supervision of two or more laboratory staff
 Generation of intellectual property, performing literature, IP and patent searches, writing/submitting/reviewing papers and patents, and evaluation of new technologies
 Operating creatively within a project research budget
 Project planning including submissions for grant funding and regulatory filings
 Generating and maintaining all technical documentation
 Acting as a scientific ambassador for the company, including making external presentation, publishing abstracts/articles, and establishing collaborations.

Qualifications
Required:
 American citizens or permanent residents (green card holders) only
 PhD (or equivalent) with at least 2 years of post-doctoral or related experience in pluripotent stem cells, megakaryocyte, or platelet research
 Hands-on cell culture experience
 Hands-on laboratory experience working with animals (mice), blood, and blood products
 Hands-on microscopy, flow cytometry, (and preferably microfluidics) experience
 Experience in a wide-range of cellular and molecular biology techniques including western blotting, IHC, qPCR, etc.
 In depth knowledge of literature and current trends in the fields of pluripotent stem cells, thrombopoiesis, (and preferably bioreactor development)
 Critical thinker with excellent problem-solving skills
 An established scientific reputation in the field, with publications in peer-reviewed journals
 Excellent written and verbal communication skills
 Strong interpersonal skills and an ability to work well both in a team and independently
 Skilled presenter able to deliver technical summaries of data as well as high level explanations designed to support strategic decisions
 Ability to multi-task efficiently and work under pressure with precision
 Experience with training laboratory staff at various levels
 Willingness to go above and beyond job requirements if necessary
